Maria Marta is a multidisciplinary artist who combines a decade of experience in art direction in the film industry with her fine arts education from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) to develop works, especially in video art, photography, and mixed media, that investigate the dialogue between ephemeral yet tangible forms.
The specificities of colors, textures, and landscapes in each image reflect cultural and political transitions, with their frictions and connections, highlighting the duality between the place of origin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the new residence in the Netherlands. By examining the notion of belonging through the imprecise nature of memory and the shifting terrain of identity, her works touch on vital points that permeate discussions about feminism and foreignness.
Her artistic process, in general, begins with the physicality of materials – whether the grain of film, the fluidity of watercolor, or the texture of plants. These elements tell stories, connecting the past and present, the seen and the imagined. Finally, the visual narrative, light, composition, and movement evoke sensations and provoke thought.
Her current research seeks to understand how images can alter our connection with memory, and how this evidences the permeability, the knot, existing between space and time, in order to create forms that do not yet exist and present them to our world, inviting us to perceive it from another perspective.
